  • These surveys were confidential so reports are anonymous.
  • For the 96-98 survey, the most frequent problems were hypothyroid, cancer and Addison’s disease
    • Causes of death in the under 9 age group were autoimmune, kidney disease/failure, and cancer
    • Types of cancer were bone, hemangiosarcoma, and mammary.
  • Addison’s research to identify mode of inheritance and hopefully a genetic marker or gene(s) was initiated as a by-product of the survey; the initial lab was at University of Oregon, later being transferred to Dr. Anita Oberbauer’s lab at UC Davis where it has remained.

  • Survey findings along with an increased number of cases in BeaCon’s open health registry led to initiation of research to identify genetic factors in the disease.

BCCA OFA CHIC Survey

The survey was initiated by the health committee, it is anonymous, and currently (Dec 2022) has 156 participants, 40% of whom are the dog’s breeders.

  • 81% were living at the time entered
  • 63% were given regular vaccinations
  • Of the 24 who had died, none had necropsies
  • Health screening:  OFA hips (51%), OFA thyroid panel (72% with 3% autoimmune thyroiditis), eye exam (60%), CEA (# =44 with 3% carriers)
  • The highest % of problems were allergies (7%) and immune disorders (8%); 12 had cancer

BCCA Embark Program

This was initiated in 2019 through Embark’s parent club program.  There have been over 200 participants worldwide.  Results are provided to Beardie’s owners who can choose what information is to be shared publicly.  There have been no recent summary reports from Embark.
