A New Frontier in the Fight Against Hemangiosarcoma
We’re more than halfway through our recognition of Canine Cancer Awareness Month, but the fight against hemangiosarcoma doesn’t pause – it continues single every day. The stories you’ve shared with us about the dogs you’ve loved and lost have touched our hearts and reminded us why this work matters so much. Your gift brings hope – it powers the search for earlier detection, better treatments, and brighter outcomes.
Thanks to your support, we can share updates on the progress we’re making – research that is helping us better understand this devastating disease and giving dogs facing hemangiosarcoma more time and better quality of life.
In our latest article, we highlight a powerful new study led by Dr. Rowan Milner at the University of Florida. With support from the AKC Canine Health Foundation, his team is testing a therapeutic cancer vaccine—one that targets a molecule called GD3 and is already showing success in treating other canine cancers like melanoma and osteosarcoma.
Early results from this clinical trial are promising. The vaccine is giving researchers, veterinarians, and dog lovers real hope—something we haven’t had in decades.
“This is the new frontier,” says Dr. Milner. “It’s giving us an option we’ve never had before.”
