AKC Registration Rules, Chapter 3

  • Litter must be registered within 6 mos of birth by owners(s) of litter
  • Limited registration can be requested for an individual dog by owner(s) of litter.  This happens after litter registration when AKC sends the litter owner(s) papers for individual puppy registration.  The owner(s) indicate limited registration on the pup’s papers which in turn are given to the new owner to complete.  The limitation continues until the litter owner(s) request a change.
  • If a breeder individually registers a dog, the name can be changed only with permission from the breeder.  Name change not permitted after a dog has produced or sired a litter.
